Renaissance Age

Welcome here, a place dedicated to Renaissance :) We adopted this fanlisting from Angel which who we spare love and interest in History and especially this period ...

Renaissance : littering, a french word for rebirth. And rebirth is the perfect word to describle this fantastic evolution of the 15th and 16th century, born in Italy.

In the late Middle Age, the bubonic plague, (called the "Black Death" in England) wiped out a third of Europe's population. This long period of illness and death played an important role in the need of changes from people, especially the new merged middle class of merchants and skilled artisans. In the 15th century, Europe's devastated population once again began to grow in size. This new demand for products and services, and the reduced number of people able to provide them (due to the deaths caused by the plague) put the lower classes in a more favourable position. More education was then needed. Arithmetic, reading, foreign languages ...

Renaissance in History

When Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1445, he forever changed the lives of people in Europe and, all over the world. In the Middle Ages, books had been costly and education rare, only the Clergy had been regular readers and owners of books. Most books had been written in Latin, considered the language of scholarship. In the Renaissance, the new educated middle classes, who could now afford books, demanded works in their own languages. Furthermore, readers wanted a greater variety of books. Almanacs, travel books, chivalry romances, and poetry were all published at this time. Simultaneously, a means of printing music was also invented, making music available at a reasonable cost. As the demand for books grew, the book trade began to flourish throughout Europe, and industries related to it, such as papermaking, thrived as well. The result of all of this was a more literate populace and a stronger economy.

Books also helped to spread awareness of a new philosophy that emerged when Renaissance scholars known as humanists returned to the works of ancient writers ... During the Middle Age, the writings of ancient, Greece and Rome, called the "classics" had been greatly ignored. From the crusades and the encounter with the arabic and byzantine cultures, some people brought back in Europe medical, scientific, philosophical, and mathematical manuscripts ... The humanists rediscovered writings on scientific matters, government, rhetoric, philosophy, and art. They were influenced by the knowledge of these ancient civilizations and by the emphasis placed on man, his intellect, and his life on Earth.

Renaissance and Consequences

The Rebirth of classical studies contributed to the development of all forms of art during the Renaissance ... Architects, sculptors and painters sought the ways of harmonious forms in the imitation of Nature and the study of the laws of the geometry. The mobility of the students and the professors between European universities also supports the diffusion of the Renaissance. And of course, printing works facilitates the diffusion of the new ideas.

Leonardo Da Vinci works on hundred of projects in the same time, including bicycle, plane, submarine and studies of the human body until his smallest details ... Colombus discovers officially a new continent which will be called America (from the name of Amerigo Vespucci, another navigator), Michelangelo paints the Sistine Chapel ceiling, Martin Luther creates a new religious movement, Shakespeare writes masterpieces of litterature, Descartes is the inventor of the Cartesian coordinate system, formulating the basis of modern geometry (analytic geometry), which in turn influenced the development of modern calculus. The astronomer Nicolas Copernic must be regarded as one of the greatest geniuses of his time : he will conquer a universal glory thanks to his theory of the planet and earthmoving, Galilei formulates the fundamental law of the fall of the bodies which he checked by very precise measurements, Kepler makes new cosmological models, Erasmus considered as the greatest scholar of his time, tries to free the methods of scholarship and thinking from the rigidity and formalism of medieval traditions, the typographical art begins to spread in Europe and various characters appear very soon ( until there, only gothic font was used ) : Nicholas Jenson records the prototype of the characters today known as Garamond, in architecture, new houses and new castles are build in a way to let the light enters ...

There is Renaissance, an era of Enlightenment thinkers, an incredible artistic and scientific evolution ... Far away from a perfect world but a pure movement of creation in every domain ... And from there will begin what is called in History : Modern World ... But this is another story ,)
