GoLive Fanlisting

Welcome here, to the fanlisting dedicated to the amazing and fantastic book of Umberto Eco : Foucault's Pendulum :)

Foucault's Pendulum ( original title : Il Pendolo di Foucault ) is a novel by Italian novelist and philosopher Umberto Eco. It was first published in 1988. Full of esoteric references to elements, such as Kabbalah, Alchemy and conspiracy theories. The name of the book derives from an actual pendulum designed by the French physicist Léon Foucault to demonstrate the rotation of the earth ... The book is divided into 10 segments represented by the ten Sefiroth. Told in the form of a kind of satirical intellectual game, three friends who work for Garamond Publisher ( Casaubon the narrator, Jacopo Belbo and Diotallevi ) create a fictitious plan ( The Plan ) that stretches throughout history and combines elements from many conspiracy theories. They feed the Plan into a computer ( Aboulafia ) that in turn helps them formulate a new conspiracy theory, which is then believed to be true by adherents of the previous conspiracies, leading to disastrous consequences ...

So you've read Foucault's Pendulum and you loved it ...
How can it be ? Why so ? What is the more attractive thing in the book ? You can't decide. Is it all the historical reference and how fast you can loose yourself between the space time travel ? or maybe is it all the conspiracy ? What we preferred was the theory which says that a link can be done between everything if we want and yes, a bit of the conspiracy ;) But maybe you preferred the narrator and every time he mentioned that all was from his imagination. Or maybe, you can't tell ... Everything is so good in this book ! That's why we love it. For the conspiracy, for the theories, for the story and of course, for the poweful imagination of the author ;)

Why Foucault's Pendulum is it a so excellent book ?
First of all because it keeps you breathless, making you believe each single line of it, until you find out that the narrator imagine it. Arch ! What a frustration ! ,) And you still keep reading, not really understanding why but you do it, and again you believe everything, until the next time. Isn't a good reason ? But there are other many reasons, as many as levels of the story ...

Conspiracies ?
So maybe you like conspiracy, you like X-Files theories and you like to think there are bigger things, people behind everything and after reading, you discover well, everything can be related, as long as you imagine it ... Mouwahahahhaaa says Eco, if you wish so ! So powerful when you think of it ! That doesn't make you think twice about History ? Look at links between events, are they real ? And events themselves, where they modify to serve goal, destiny and interest of some people ? Isn't looking like a good, big, old, conspiracy to you ? Can you still look at world leaders the same way ? or just historian ? Looking carefully, maybe like us you don't know anymore what to think ... Well, another good reason to love the book, because it push you to re-think some of our conviction and believes. And a book who makes us think twice of our convictions and believes is really a good book ... Don't we mostly believe more books than people ? ;)

"Wanting connections, we found connections always, everywhere, and between everything. The world exploded in a whirling network of kinships, where everything pointed to everything else, everything explained everything else ..."

The following are some of the secret and not-so-secret groups and beliefs appear in Foucault's Pendulum :

- The Knights Templar
- The Rosicrucians
- The Gnostics
- The Freemasons
- The Bavarian Illuminati
- The Elders of Zion
- The Assassins of Alamut
- The Cabalists
- The Cathars
- The Jesuits

The following are actually not involved with the Plan :

- Panta Rei
- Candomblé
- Opus Dei

The Plan is a fourteenth-century French text ... Using a tourist guidebook, Lia, Casaubon's girl friend, reconstructs and translates it thus, as a merchant's list of the day's orders ( the reader who knows French will hopefully understand the irony ) :

In Rue Saint Jean :
36 sous for wagons of hay.
Six new lengths of cloth with seal
to rue des Blancs-Manteaux.
Crusaders roses to make a jonchee :
six bunches of six in the six following places,
each 20 deniers, making 120 deniers in all.
Here is the order :
the first to the Fort
item the second to those in Porte-aux-Pains
item to the Church of the Refuge
item to the Church of Notre Dame, across the river
item to the old building of the Cathars
item to rue de la Pierre-Ronde.
And three bunches of six before the feast, in the whores street.

So, if you haven't yet read Foucault's Pendulum, run to the next library or bookshop and take it !!! ,)

"There are four kinds of people in this world: cretins, fools, morons, and lunatics."
- Jacopo Belbo -
