Val McDermid, one of the most interesting Queen of Crime of these times. Thrilling ... Val McDermid's work is not only amazing or completely wonderful but simply thrilling.
When I discovered McDermid's novels, I was looking for something real, a good thriller just as I like them. I had read many mystery and thrillers. Load of great author but not exacly what I was looking for ( except Nicci French books ) ...
Val McDermid's works changed the thriller genre by writting darker and slower stories. Like it was at a certain time, before French, Grafton and all of those ( that I also like a lot ! don't mistake me ! ) Not only is her work completely new and depict today's society as dark and tortured as it is but Val McDermid also spits her opinions throught her books mostly the feminin cause :) And that's a so interesting point in this genre ... But more, Val McDermid brings mystery style to a higher level with her books.
Val McDermid is like wine. Book after book, she reveals to her readers a dark side of society and human nature. Dark, with a good rythm ( perfectly slow, perfectly fast, at the perfect time, at the perfect moment ) and a plot not so easy to guess, a tidy bit reveal at each page you turn, complex second role. A perfect thriller, that you can close, not that you bring everywhere but which brings you everywhere ... But Val McDermid is not one of those who can only wrote series : she writes also awesome stand alone. Have to be honest, each Val McDermid Book must have a place in your library, as a perfect Queen of Crime she is !
Val McDermid is now very popular with the success of her books. Not only is she often nominee or winner at the Dagger price ( sort of Oscar for british author of mystery genre ) but her popular serie with characters Dr Tony Hill and Detective Carol Jordan has been adapted for television by the BBC in a serie titled : Wire in the Blood ;)
